Marcus Rashford - Written by Jake Weber

Marcus Rashford is an English forward that plays for Manchester United. Rashford is a great example of how effective a team’s youth system can be and an example of a player who can make an impact off the field.

Born in Manchester in 1997, Marcus grew up a Manchester United fan. When he was eight years old, he officially joined the club’s youth system. He would spend the next ten years honing his skills in Manchester’s youth teams. After a decade of hard work, Rashford made his official senior team debut in 2015 in a Europa League match against Danish team FC Midtjylland. He scored two goals in the second half of the game and became Manchester United’s youngest ever goal-scorer in a European competition. Soon after, Rashford would make his Premier League debut where he would score two goals and provide an assist in Manchester United’s victory over Arsenal.

Rashford burst onto the scene as an exciting young winger who was living his dream through his childhood club. Over the next seven years he would enjoy an up-and-down career as Manchester United went through multiple coaches in Rashford’s time with the club. He currently finds himself in blistering form for United, having scored five goals in his last six Premier League matches.

Besides his work on the field, something that makes Rashford stand out is his work off the field. Towards the start of the pandemic in 2020, Rashford began foundations that would help feed the homeless population of England. He spent time with his parents volunteering at homeless shelters when he was younger. He also began a program that would provide free lunches during the pandemic to English school children. His initial goal was to raise enough money for 400,000 meals. However, his campaign was able to raise enough money for 4 million meals for children across England. His charitable work also includes a literacy program he started, and all of this has earned him recognition from the British Government and the public as a man who uses his money and stature to give back to the community in which he lives.
