Soccer Numbers - Written by Jake Weber

In most sports, players can wear any number they want and can have personal meaning to a player, but typically don’t have much meaning beyond that. However, in soccer, while a player can wear any number, certain numbers correlate to their position on the field. Here is a quick guide to what different numbers can mean in soccer.

  • 1 is Typically worn by the starting goalkeeper.

  • 2-5 are usually worn by the starting defenders.

  • 6 and 8 are worn by central midfielders, with 6 usually being worn by a more defensive midfielder.

  • 7 and 11 are worn by wingers.

  • 10 is seen as the most important number on the field and is usually worn by the best attacking player on a team who usually plays in a central attacking midfielder or striker role.

  • Finally 9 is worn by a team’s striker most of the time.
