Soccer Lingo - written by Jake Weber

For the article this week I thought it would be a fun idea to go over some of the terms used in soccer that casual or new fans might not understand. So this article will be formatted as a list of different terms and lingos used over in Europe and around the world when talking about the beautiful game. On the left will be the soccer terms and, on the right, will be an similar word or phrase

• Pitch = Field

• Boots = Cleats

• Kit = Uniform/Jersey

• Leg = A game in a series. For example, Champion’s league knockout rounds are decided across two games, or legs.

• Gaffer = Coach

• Brace = When a player scores two goals in a game

• Clean Sheet = Shut out

• Nutmeg = A ball played between a player’s legs

• Cap = An appearance for the national team

• Draw = Tie

• Goalazzo = An incredible goal

• Added Time = Time added to the end of a half to make up for time during the 45 minutes that the ball was not in play

• Mark/Mark Up = Guarding a player

• Set Piece = A dead ball play i.e., a corner kick or free kick

• Through ball = A ball played in behind the defense in the path of a teammate
